The mail alliance, a brand of mailworXs GmbH in Würzburg, had its inaugural visit to the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in Berne. At the meeting, the mail alliance and the UPU had a concrete exchange of views in the course of developments in Germany as well as in the con-text of the new membership.
Wuerzburg, 11th October 2022 – The mail alliance, a brand of mailworXs GmbH, has sealed its membership of the Consultative Committee of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) with an inaugural visit in Berne. The talks focused on the role of standards in the postal industry and the importance of opening the UPU to general market liberalisation, which is becoming increasingly important for the seamless cooperation of international postal services. At the meeting, the mail alliance was represented by the Managing Directors Michael Kunter and Mario Eichelmann as well as Nadine Nagel (Head of IT) and Melanie Leinz (Operations e-Com- merce). The team was welcomed by Masahiko Metoki, Director General of the UPU, his deputy Marjan Osvald, and Walter Trezek (Consultative Committee of the UPU, Chairperson).
“For us, the meeting was a breakthrough. The talks with the head of the Universal Postal Union showed that we are now on an equal level with the members and that the mail alliance as a network with its letter services is recognised by the UPU," says Michael Kunter. "The merger is on the one hand the reward for years of work, but on the other hand also the logical consequence of market liberalisation in Germany."
Since 1 July 2022, the mail alliance has been a member of the Consultative Committee (CC) of the Universal Postal Union and thus directly represented in the Universal Postal Union. This membership opens new doors for international players, especially for the delivery of merchandise shipments in Germany. The membership in the CC of the Universal Postal Union enables mail alliance to offer international postal operators the delivery of small goods consignment in Germany.
For Michael Kunter, the reasons for joining are obvious: "Postal services are confronted with chang- ing consumer and ordering behaviour and increased competitive pressure in e-commerce. There- fore, we e-commerce shop operators are looking for new delivery solutions that comply with and are compatible with the worldwide IT systems and standards of the postal world. We as mail alliance have laid the foundations for this and are very pleased to be able to expand this role as a member of the UPU Consultative Committee."
There are numerous conditions that must be met to become a member of the UPU. The UPU's mission is "to promote the sustainable development of high quality, efficient and universally acces- sible postal services worldwide with the aim of facilitating communication among the people of the world".
Since its foundation in 1874, the Universal Postal Union, based in Berne, has regulated the international cooperation of postal operators from 192 countries and the framework conditions for cross- border postal traffic. International cooperation is promoted, including mutual technical assistance in the field of postal services.
The Universal Postal Union is co-organiser of the international Parcel + Post Expo (https://www.parcelandpostexpo.com/de) at Messe Frankfurt (18 – 20 October). The Parcel + Post Expo is the leading global event for parcel delivery, e-commerce logistics and the postal industry worldwide.

About the Universal Postal Union (UPU)
Established in 1874, the Universal Postal Union (UPU), with its headquarters in the Swiss capital Berne, is the second oldest international organization worldwide.
With its 192 member countries the UPU is the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players. It helps to ensure a truly universal network of up-to-date products and services.
In this way, the organization fulfils an advisory, mediating and liaison role, and provides technical assistance where needed. It sets the rules for international mail exchanges and makes recommen- dations to stimulate growth in mail, parcel and financial services volumes and improve quality of service for customers.
Postal stakeholders that are not public postal operators or regulators can add their voice to the UPU's deliberations through the Consultative Committee (CC). The Committee represents the in- terests of the wider postal sector and provides a framework for effective dialogue.
